As we all know the sun doesn’t shine everyday so some days we have to be our own #motivation. You know those cloudy, rainy, gloomy days!? Yes those are the days when your #willpower has to take over if you are striving towards any goal! The willpower response is a reaction to an internal conflict. You want to do one thing, such as smoke a cigarette or supersize your lunch, but know you shouldn’t. Or you know you should do something, like go to the gym or get your paperwork caught up on , or organize that closet you been wanting to, but you’d rather do nothing. The prefrontal cortex (the section of the brain right behind your forehead) is the part that helps us with things like decision making  and regulating our behaviour. Self-control, or willpower, falls under this heading, and thus is taken care of in this part of the brain.

To be effective at controlling our urges and making sound decisions, the prefrontal cortex needs to be looked after. That means feeding it with good-quality food so it has enough energy to do its job and getting enough sleep.

Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets fatigued with heavy use. … While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Sadly we aren’t born with strong willpower but we sure can strengthen it. By setting a weekly goal for yourself & achieving it then setting another one is a simple way to start this process I promise !! You’ll feel proud & motivated ! Im living proof! I did not have the willpower & motivation that I do today till I started taking care of myself mind, body & soul.  And by continuously & routinely practicing this over the years has helped me reach my goals beyond what I would have ever imagined. So get out of your own way stop listening to that negative Nancy in your head & JUST DO IT!! Whatever it is & when it’s done pay close attention to how accomplished & awesome you will feel.
